Barn Conversion, Telegraph Street, Cottenham
Mr & Mrs Rowland Ware

This was a late 19th C threshing barn. It's doors were front and back with a brick floor in the central bay. The former farm house fronted on to Telegraph Street, and the plot was large enough to accommodate the conversion to a separate dwelling.

Exterior view of converted barn

The barn structure needed considerable repair especially around the top of the building where there was serious decay of the timber frame. It had been used for domestic storage. Planning consent was obtained for conversion into a dwelling.

The challenge was to minimise overlooking on to the adjacent dwelling whilst maintaining good daylight into the conversion.

Rear, light and airy downstairs rooms

The barn is planned with full height glazing to the position of the former double door. The stairwell and entrance  are planned behind the glazing. Slats are provided to the first floor glazing, angled upwards to let in sunlight and skylight and to prevent overlooking.

Glazing is provided to the ground and first floor rooms facing on to the stairwell. Light penetrates through the building into the main reception rooms.

The Contractor was Andy Knott Construction Ltd and the project was completed in 2008.
