Bar Hill Village Hall + Sports & Social Club
Bar Hill had plans for a much expanded Village Hall. Although the existing 1970’s building had reached the end of its life, it was decided to retain the steel-framed shell and wrap an enlarged building around the existing structure. The extended building has two parts:
- Firstly the Social Club on the first floor, which contains a bar and three lounges, one of which is extensively glazed, and
a viewing balcony overlooking the adjacent playing fields
- Secondly the Village Hall for community use on the ground floor, which contains a playgroup, changing rooms, a meeting room and two multi-use halls.

Two curving roof planes clad with steel sheeting link the various parts of the building. Access to the two parts is via a glazed stairwell containing the lift and stairwell. The lounge and the balcony are timber framed and the finish here is stained timber.
The new external walls are banded blockwork, and where the existing walls are exposed, they are clad in cedar weatherboarding. The incorporation of the existing two-storey framed structure into the new building resulted in overall cost savings but also represented a challenge for the main contractor, which was successfully overcome.
