The Fruit Farm, Chittering, Cambridge.

The Fruit Farm Barn is a traditional timber framed barn, built off a brick plinth, with 2 elegant braced collar trusses supporting purlins and the main slated roof. The barn has two single storey additions.

The South extension is planned as the reception area, with a stair up into the main barn. The East extension houses the plant and equipment room. The ground floor of the main barn contains office space, a meeting room and a commissioning area for hardware. The first floor is retained as open plan offices.

The existing barn was in poor condition, and all the masonry walls have had to be renewed under the existing frame. The main frame members and roof have been retained, but stud walls have needed replacing. The new first floor is built off la loadbearing inner skin of fair faced blockwork. We aimed to retain the main structure of the barn, and the new openings in the structure, are small and fit between studs. The area behind the barn doors on the east and west elevations, becomes a full height glazed screen, but slide aside barn doors are provided to the external elevation, to close over the glazed doors.
